These mountains are the folds formed due to the pressure in a north - south direction. To the west of which is the wilderness or Loot Desert and to the east the plains of Sistan. The Palang Kooh Mountains overlooking the plains of Sistan are a prominent feature in this region. The accumulation of basalt in the Khajeh Mountains on the fringes of the Hamoon Lake, and west of Zabol is the only important characteristic in the Sistan plain.
The mountainous area and Taftan peak is located in the southeast of Iran, and within a distance of 50 km. southeast of Khash city. This mountain embraces the Taftan volcano and is the tallest mountain of Baluchestan, with several peaks. Its famous volcanic summit known as 'Chehel Tan' lies 380 km. north of the Oman Sea.
Taftan is a Persian word which means "The Place of Heat".
Other Altitudes and Summits, Sistan Va Baluchestan
The other mountains of the province are, Malek Siyah Mountains along the Zahedan - Zabol Road, and on the borders of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Bamdasht Mountains, between Saravan and Chabahar, Ahooran Mountain Ranges that separate Chabahar and Iran Shahr from each other. Also the famous 'Sorkheh' Pass is located here.
Bazman Mountain, Iran Shahr
These mountains are located to the northeast of Challeh-e-Jazmoorian, and its height is approximately 3,489 m. and extends towards the west, adjoining the Barez range in the province of Kerman. This mountain segregates the Challeh-e-Loot from Jazmoorian, and is covered with molten volcanic material. The city of Bazman is situated in the southeastern slopes of the mountains.
Baluchestan Mountains, Iran Shahr
The said mountains are located to the south of the Sistan Mountains and extend between the Challeh-e-Loot, Jazmoorian, and the desert area of Mashekl and the Oman Sea.
Sedarya Lake, Chabahar
This lake is formed by three smaller lakes in the higher slopes of the Taftan Mountains. The depth of two of these lakes in its northern sector is not much, thereby the water is palatable. Whereas the other is a larger lake with permanent, but salty water. This phenomena being a natural attraction in the Baluchestan region.
Persian Gulf and Oman Sea Coasts, Chabahar
In the southern sector of Sistan Va Baluchestan is the coastal area of the Oman Sea. Due to the prominent position it enjoys regarding access to the free waters, in addition to other aspects such as trade, commerce and navigation this province holds specific location. The winter months can be best for water sports and recreation.
This lake lies near the borders of Iran and Pakistan, and the Mashekl or Mashkeed Rivers flow into this lake. In addition to the tributaries of the Seemish and Rakhtak rivers, that flow from the eastern slopes of the borderline mountains. This lake is valued on basis of environment.
Hamoon Lake, Zabol
This lake is valued for its natural phenomena both from the national and international point of view. This region holds its own in respect to being a habitat for rare animal and plant species. Besides being an axis for the food chain of the vast desert region, having economic values and providing a habitat for the refuge and breeding of a number of birds both endemic and migrant.
This seasonal lake is located to the west of Baluchestan and a part of it is in Kerman. Its basin extends over an area of approximately 6,9000 sq. km. The Hamoon Jazmoorian lies between the two mountain ranges of Bashagard in the south and Shahvaran in the north. From east to west this lake prolongs over 300 km. and from north to south which constitutes its width extends to 100 km. The Halil Rood and Bampour Rivers flow into the same.
This lake is located in the southwest of Khash and is a vicinity where seasonal flood waters collect, thereby having a full capacity in spring. During the other seasons this area turns into a wetland and a wildlife habitat.
Sistan Plain, Zabol
The Sistan plain is one of the plains of Iran which is placed on an average of 475-500 m. above sea level. This is an alluvial plain enriched by the Hirmand River and its overflow in the surroundings
Loot Plain, Zahedan
The plain of Loot is the largest hollow or pit in the plateau of Iran and a part of which is located between Sistan Va Baluchestan. This plain is one of the hottest and driest in the world with a minimum trace of water. To the west of this plain, is another area of wilderness called Namakzar, which is impenetrable in the rainy seasons. The eastern half of the plain is covered by moving sands, but a part of its southern sector is penetrable.
This valley is one of the most beautiful spots in the Sistan Va Baluchestan region, in some parts of which there are mountains of grit. The basement of the valley is generally covered with herbs such as the Indian fig, berry, wild plum, tamarisk, sweetbrier, and the alder tree. This vicinity can be considered as an important recreational area of the province.
Forests, Sistan Va Baluchestan
The forest areas of Sistan Va Baluchestan province are scanty and not at all dense like the forests of the north and west of Iran. The forests of this vicinity are scattered around the elevated areas, springs and along the river banks. Near Konarak in the Chabahar region are traces of forests with tamarisk and the Indian fig trees.
